Is My Drywall Repair Up to Standard?

Hey everyone! I'm a bit concerned about the way my drywall guy handled a patch for an old phone line socket hole. Instead of properly backing it up, he just slapped on some mud and spackle (not sure what the right term is). The room is getting painted next week, so I need to know if his work is sufficient or if he really cut corners here. Here's a link to the picture: https://imgur.com/a/q7Y2Slz. Any thoughts?

Honestly, it looks like it'll hold up fine. Sure, your drywall guy could have done a more thorough job, like cutting a square patch and using a California patch method, but what he did should work too. If he didn't charge you a lot, I wouldn't worry about it. I've done similar repairs, and they've held up fine without cracking.

It really depends on how he finishes it. I did a similar patch in my parents' house, and it shrank a bit as it dried, but it’s held strong for over 25 years! Just make sure he applies it properly.

Looks like it's okay for painting, but ideally, he should have used some backing since there was access to the back of the wall. Using a small piece of drywall or some blocking would have given it more support. But if the texture match is good, it might work out fine!
