I just found out that my husband left a bag of potting soil sitting open in our backyard. We live in a warm, dry climate, and I'm concerned about pests getting in. Is there any chance the soil is still good to use? It's mostly full, and I'd prefer not to toss it out if it's salvageable!

If you're worried about pests, you can put the potting soil in a black garbage bag and leave it in the hot sun for a few days. The heat should take care of any unwanted critters!
In general, it's likely fine! Unless you spot any big colonies of ants moving in, you shouldn't have much to worry about.
I once had a similar issue when I had a goose recovering in my garage, and my potting soil was left exposed to whatever critters could get in. It turned out that mice got into mine and used the bags to stash away tons of sunflower seeds, which then sprouted! But I didn't find any harmful pests. Your potting soil is probably still good too!
Oh man! Haha. Sunflowers aren’t the worst thing!

Oh awesome. Thanks!
