Is My Pocket Hole Drill Bit Dull or Is My Setup Off?

I've recently started using the Kreg 720 jig for making pocket holes in 44x44mm pine timber and 18mm shutter plywood. My initial attempts were successful, especially with vertical drilling, but when I tried horizontal drilling, I encountered issues. I noticed some scoring on my test pieces (images linked below). I'm wondering if this problem is due to a dull drill bit since the drill did take a fall, or could it be related to my drilling speed or too much waste in the jig, as suggested by some YouTube tutorials?

It sounds like your jig might not be adjusted right. Even though I don't have that specific model, I recommend checking the instructions or watching a setup video for your Kreg 720. Your drill bit is likely fine; it might be more about how the wood is secured. If the jig isn't clamping down properly, it can affect your drilling angle and lead to those scoring issues on the surface. Make sure the wood is held tightly in place—otherwise, the drill bit can skip around.

I agree! Looks like the jig isn't clamped solidly to the wood. If you're drilling at a shallow angle like that, the drill bit may not bite into the wood properly. Ensure that your board is secured well, as it should not move at all when you drill. If the automatic adjustment isn't working, you might need to troubleshoot that before blaming the bit.
