Is My Water Bill Fair If There’s a Leak Under the Sidewalk?

I'm dealing with a frustrating situation here in Alameda County. My city is charging me for 100 gallons of water per day, and I suspect there's a leak somewhere under the public sidewalk. They've told me that any leak from the water meter towards my house is my responsibility. However, a leak detector indicated that the problem is between the meter and the sewer drain on the public sidewalk. How is this even legal? I don't see any visible water leakage in my garden, which makes me think it could be my neighbor's roots causing trouble. After testing the shut-off valve at my garden, the meter still shows a leak, even after the city replaced it last year. My bill has skyrocketed to over $10,000, and they've even put a lien on my property! If there really was that much water leaking, wouldn't my garden or driveway show some signs?

I’ve been in a similar situation! When my bill went crazy, I got a leak detection service, and it turned out the problem was at the meter, buried deep. After some digging, I fixed it myself for pretty cheap. It’s usually better to tackle these things head-on!

It sounds like the meter is picking up water flow, but you definitely need a plumber to help locate the leak. Sometimes leaks can be underground, so a pro can really help. Don’t wait too long on this, as it could just lead to more issues down the road.

I totally get it! You should pinpoint the leak and dig it up to take photos. If it’s on the street side of the meter, you’ll need to get the city involved since you can’t shut off the water to repair it. If they keep billing you, consider getting a lawyer involved to help resolve it.
