Hey everyone! I'm totally new to woodworking and honestly don't have experience with many hands-on projects. My parents never taught me these skills, and I've never even hung a picture on a wall. But I'm eager to learn! I recently came up with this idea and wondered if it's crazy for someone just starting out.
I want to capture a sound recording of my girlfriend's heartbeat and use speakers to create a visual pattern in water. I'd take pictures of the pattern and either 3D model it or wing it from there. I'm curious about how complicated the actual woodworking aspect would be. Would I just need to figure out the scale, sketch it out, cut, and sand? Or is this too much for a beginner to handle? Just to clarify, this is a long-term goal for me—not something I plan to dive into right away. What do you all think?

You know what? Set aside some cash and just dive in! Worst case, you learn something and have fun trying. Give it a shot! Most of us just wing it when we start out, and you'll find your way through experimentation.
It sounds like a lovely idea, but for a beginner, maybe start with something more straightforward like making a small box. Your vision might be a bit over your head right now. You might need access to a CNC machine to pull off that sound and water part, which is a lot to tackle as a first project. I'd suggest keeping it simple initially.
I totally get that! I was planning to aim small for my first few projects before tackling something big. Just wanted to make sure my ideas weren't completely outlandish.
I’m not sure how the woodworking fits in, but you could make wall art that represents sounds! Many have created art from recordings of phrases or laughter. It sounds like a really ambitious project, so why not start simpler and gradually work your way up? You could consider 3D printing your model and using that for inspiration, but keep the actual wood carving for later—it's a challenge for sure! Enjoy the journey as much as the final piece!
I appreciate that! The idea is to create something special for my girlfriend using my own creativity and hands. I know I need to start small before jumping into big projects, so thanks for the reminder!

Haha, thanks! I’m moving soon, and once I settle in, I’ll start exploring woodworking. Just brainstorming for now!
