Hey everyone, I'm curious about using Osage orange for a maul or sledgehammer handle. Has anyone here tried it out? How does it compare to the more common choices like hickory and ash? Would love to hear your experiences and thoughts!

I think if you have a nice clear Osage log, milling it quartersawn could yield some awesome specialty lumber! But for a maul handle, hickory and ash would still be my go-tos due to their resilience. Just something to keep in mind if you want the best for heavy strikes.

I've heard some folks mention that Osage can be a bit brittle, so it really depends on how you use it. If you have a straight enough piece, it could work well for a maul, but hickory and ash have that proven durability that won't let you down. I'd still be open to giving it a shot if you can find a solid log!
