Is Pea Gravel a Good Alternative to Mulch for a Dog Run?

I'm considering switching from mulch to pea gravel in my backyard dog run area, which measures about 13' x 7'. My old dog struggles to walk on the mulch, and regardless of how often we clean or replace it, it tends to smell. I'm curious about the benefits and downsides of using pea gravel instead. Will I regret this change compared to mulch?

You might want to rethink using pea gravel since it's round and tends to roll around. It could be more trouble than it's worth, especially for a dog run. Instead, consider using something like 1/4-inch crushed rock. It's angular, so it packs down well and won't scatter as easily, making it a better choice for your pup's space.

I heard about 1/4-inch crushed rock too. Does that really make a difference in how stable it feels versus rounded stones?
