Is Plywood a Good Choice for My Office Countertop?

I'm working on a built-in for my office and considering using white oak veneered plywood for the countertop. I would edge band it with hardwood since it won't see heavy use. I'm also thinking about sealing and staining it with hard wax oil. Is it a good idea to stick with this plywood option, or should I consider using full hardwood panels instead? What are people's experiences with this?

Edge banding might not provide the durability you're looking for, so I'd recommend gluing a solid wood edge instead. It’ll give your countertop more strength and a cleaner finish. Just remember to finish the underside too, especially in areas that might see moisture!

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely consider the solid wood edge, especially for better durability.

Using plywood for a countertop is quite common and it can work well! You might want to use a solid wood nosing instead of just edge banding for added strength and a nicer look. Just make sure to biscuit joint the nosing onto the plywood for extra support. Also, using a subtop can help with stability as well!
