I'm considering using shrink wrap to insulate my windows this winter, but I have a concern regarding the air gap. My windowsill has about a 12cm (5 1/2") gap between the window and the sill. Will this setup still be effective at keeping the cold out?

What exactly are you aiming for with the shrink wrap? Just trying to get something similar to double glazing on a budget? That’s totally possible!
Using shrink wrap will definitely help, even with that gap. It won’t be as effective as if it were tight, since there's room for some convection, but it will still provide some insulation.
Have you thought about replacing the window instead? It might be a bit more upfront, but a single window shouldn't be too costly. Plus, it'll definitely give you better insulation long-term.
You must not have bought windows lately! Depending on size, you're looking at around $1k per window these days.

Yeah, I think that's the plan. Just a little extra help for the winter, nothing too fancy.
