I just had an energy audit done on my small home built in the 1870s, and now I'm wondering if I should go ahead with spray foam insulation for the ceiling of my unfinished cellar. It's a pretty damp place down there. The energy auditors suggested that I insulate it, but I'm a bit hesitant. In the past, I insulated the heat supply ducts after seeing it on 'This Old House.' While that kept the ducts warm, I noticed my kitchen floor got colder as a result. I'm worried that if I insulate the cellar ceiling, it might make my living space even colder. I know the auditors are trying to sell a service too, so I'm looking for some real advice here. Anyone with experience?

Yeah, spray foam insulation could really help with that! But it’s important to consider whether you have proper ventilation in your cellar. If it’s too sealed off, that could cause issues. I recommend keeping it ventilated in the warmer months and closing it off during winter. Makes a difference!

I have a bulkhead door that I open in the spring, summer, and fall to air it out. Seems to do the trick! Just make sure you don’t trap moisture in there.
