I'm dealing with some old, painted cedar shakes on my house that are in dire need of a paint job. Unfortunately, I'm short on both time and funds to hire someone to do it. To complicate matters, I've had insulation blown into the walls around 20 years ago, and I'm worried that removing the shakes might disturb that insulation. Would putting painted T1-11 siding over the existing shakes be a decent option? It's not my favorite aesthetic, but I'm looking for any advice that could help me out, as I want to avoid being the eyesore of the neighborhood.

It sounds like you're in a tough spot! But honestly, if you're thinking that T1-11 is the solution, you're probably facing more issues because of that. It might not be the best fix after all. Why not explore some other options that could be easier and less damaging?
How bad are your shakes, really? I’ve got similar painted shakes and yeah, it’s a pain to maintain, but getting T1-11 installed might end up costing you close to what it’d take to just paint them! Have you thought about using a paint sprayer on them instead?
I’m not sure how terrible they are, but they definitely don't look great at the moment. Maybe I'll look into using a sprayer!
Honestly, I'd recommend against the T1-11. It might look pretty bad over the shakes. I know it’s an easy fix idea, but in the long run, it’s not going to be worth it to cover it up like that.

Thanks for the input! I guess I need to consider a few more angles.
