I'm looking for a high-powered, suitcase-sized, battery-operated vacuum that can match the performance of a standard shop vac. Can anyone tell me if the 60V dust extractor works as a general-purpose vacuum, or is it strictly meant for dust extraction only?

I deal with all kinds of spills and messes at my job, and while we've tested a lot of vacuums, I'd recommend a Craftsman for heavy-duty use over this DeWalt. If you're only going to use it for light dry vacuuming, you might find it lasts a while, but I’d still suggest looking elsewhere for anything tougher.
Honestly, DeWalt's vacuums haven’t impressed me. They really seem to miss the mark with their designs. I’ve had trouble with their look-alike products when they branch out from hand tools. Just throwing their name on vacuums doesn’t cut it.
The 60V dust extractor does function as a regular vacuum, but keep in mind the bag is pretty small. I used mine on a big job rewiring fire alarms in several multi-story buildings, and it saved me a ton of time. If you're planning to use it for heavy cleaning, just be aware you might need to empty the bag a lot!
Yeah, I had the same issue. It worked well for my tasks, but I had access to power. If I didn't, I wouldn't choose this model for heavy-duty cleaning.

Totally agree! Their vacuums tend to rank below others in performance.
