Hey everyone! I'm new to indoor gardening and I have a peace lily and some orchids. I'm looking to expand my collection to include a snake plant or a philodendron in the future. Is there a universal potting soil and fertilizer that can work for most indoor plants, so I don't have to keep buying special mixes for each type?

There's definitely no perfect universal mix for every plant out there. While you might find some blends, most will need amendments based on the specific plants. For example, orchids require materials like sphagnum moss and orchid bark, which are quite different from what a peace lily would need. So, it really depends on the variety of plants you're planning to keep!
I personally stick with a standard potting soil and adjust it as needed. I usually mix in some perlite, orchid bark, or coarse sand depending on what I'm growing. It's super flexible and seems to work fine for various plants, including those that need more moisture retention!
So, the short answer is no, there isn't exactly a universal soil or fertilizer that works perfectly. However, if you use a basic mix with a balance of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark, it gets you pretty far. Just remember, plants have different needs, especially when it comes to watering and light conditions, so it's all about how you manage them! Plus, flowering plants can require different nutrients, so keep that in mind! I’ve had success with pothos and philodendrons in a mix like that, just be sure to pay attention to their specific care. It’s all about the right environment for them!
Thanks for all the insights! This really helps me figure out what to do!

I get that! I'm mainly worried about my peace lily too. I just want something that works without needing a million different types of soil!
