I'm looking for a lightweight, powered digging tool that can help with various small projects around my yard. I've seen some equipment that's meant for digging holes for individual plants, but they all seem a bit cumbersome, like a hybrid between a jackhammer and something else. My ideal tool would give me a bit of power to ease the strain on my back while digging instead of relying on a traditional spade and jumping on it. Renting a bigger machine feels impractical for my needs, so I'm curious if there's anything designed for home use that fits this description.

If you already have a hammer drill, consider getting a spade shovel attachment - it's definitely worth it! You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/qDr3w7mutVw. Makes DIY projects so much easier without the heavy lifting!
When I did some landscaping, we utilized different sizes of augers. They can be operated solo or with a partner, depending on the size. The best ones have safety features built-in. My favorite was a 36-inch auger on a skid steer. They made digging much safer and easier!
There are also heavier-duty steel digging shovels available. I regret not picking one up sooner; it's been a game changer for hand digging. They look just like regular spades but can really stand up to tough work.
I've got a Bosch rotary hammer with a spade bit, and it's been one of my best buys! It digs through tough ground like butter and even has additional bits for chiseling and breaking up surfaces. If you can get a buddy to help, one can shovel while the other operates the hammer - super efficient!
That sounds awesome! I might need to consider getting one of those. How does it handle rocky soil?
I've been testing out a Wen air tool with a spade attachment. It's much lighter than a jackhammer but still packs a punch. It's hard to say if it's quicker yet, but it’s definitely easier to handle. If you have a compressor, the tool itself is around $200.
There are definitely solutions out there! For instance, they make power planter bits that can be used with a hammer drill. You might want to check out some auger drill bits specifically designed for planting; they're pretty handy. Here’s a link to one of those options: https://www.vevor.com/auger-drill-bit-c_11430/vevor-auger-drill-bits-for-planting-set-of-2-garden-auger-drill-bit-spiral-drill-bit-for-post-hole-digger-bulbs-planting-holes-digging-for-3-8-hex-drive-drill-p_010969042655

That's really good to know! Safety is key with those machines; I'll have to check them out!
