Is There a Safe Alternative to Drywall for Garage Ceilings?

I'm working on a DIY project to install drywall in my garage, which is about 20x20 in size. The walls have exposed studs, and this is my first time putting up drywall. The problem is that the ceiling joists are 2x4s spaced 24 inches apart, while the standard is usually 16 inches. I'm concerned that even lightweight drywall might be too heavy for these joists. Since I'm not skilled enough to add more joists and want to keep costs down without hiring help, I'm wondering if it's realistic to use drywall in this setup. Am I being overly cautious about the weight, and do you know of any cost-effective alternatives to drywall?

You can definitely hang 1/2” drywall on 2x4s spaced 24” apart without much issue. It should hold up fine if installed correctly! Just be mindful of the weight; the joists should handle the load well enough.

What about sagging? My garage gets really hot in Southern California since there's no insulation.
