Is This Flower an Annual or Perennial?

My mom bought a flower a couple of weeks ago after her uncle passed away, and initially, it was blooming beautifully. Unfortunately, just two days later, it started dying, turning crispy and brown. She decided to leave it be for a while, but then about a week ago, she learned from ChatGPT that she should cut off all the dead parts. Now, a week later, there's a new flower blooming, and it seems to be doing okay! I'm curious though, is this flower an annual or a perennial? Thanks! ?

It looks like you might have a type of dianthus, possibly a variety like China Pink based on the flower shape and size. Most dianthus are actually perennials. If you really want it to thrive, you should consider planting it directly into the ground. If you prefer keeping it in a pot, just make sure to repot it in something bigger. Don't sweat too much about how it looks this year—mine took until the second year to really flourish! Just be careful with weeding; someone accidentally cut mine, thinking they were grass, but it didn't kill them. Here's how mine looked after a year: https://preview.redd.it/shg6sz8fru8f1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=79e4e19b00919b365e9fa1b1782b7b77e2ee50d3

They look similar to when mine had a lot of flowers too! I'm relieved it's a perennial. I'll definitely take your advice and repot it, thanks a ton! ?

Nice to hear there's a new bloom! Just to clarify, the plant might be considered 'dead' simply because the initial flowers have wilted and shriveled. It's not really dead if it can still send out new growth like you're seeing now! Keep tending to it, and it should bounce back nicely!

Yeah, it definitely looked completely dead at one point, but now it's surprising to see it coming back!
