I recently renovated my kitchen and got new countertops installed. Before paying the contractor, I decided to do a detailed inspection. I found a strange notch at the seam of the L-shaped countertops and sent a picture to the contractor, who told me it was epoxy fill. Is this a common practice, or does it suggest damage that was just covered up? I'm totally new to kitchen remodeling and would appreciate any advice on how to handle this situation.

Sorry to say, but it looks like that area has been gouged or chipped and then filled with epoxy—possibly even JB Weld. I'd ask your contractor for clarification on what type of filler was used. Just a heads up, if it's not properly sealed, it can be unsanitary, especially with food prep areas. You might want to push for a new countertop if you're not satisfied!
That notch doesn't look great at all. If it bothers you, definitely be firm with the contractor about getting it fixed. You deserve a flawless countertop!
He mentioned he could add a better epoxy. Do you think it’s reasonable for me to request a whole new countertop?
