I'm looking to repaint my upstairs bathroom because there's some mildew on the ceiling and it desperately needs a fresh coat. It's been 15 years since it was last painted, and I live in a high cost of living area close to NYC (about 1.25 hours away). I recently got a quote from a professional painting company for the job, which includes scraping the peeling paint, cleaning the mildew, and priming where necessary. They also mentioned repairs for nail pops and cracks, and then painting the ceiling, walls, door, and frame with two finish coats. The total estimate came out to $1,182.97 including tax, which seems a bit steep for just one room. Am I being taken for a ride with this quote?

Super cheap for a room, seriously! Did you think it would be less for all that work? Just keep in mind, if you DIY, you might save money, but it takes time and effort. They’ll handle all the prep and cleanup, which is a huge plus if you don’t want to mess with it yourself!
Honestly, that quote isn’t bad considering the work involved. Mildew cleaning and repairing cracks can be a hassle. Plus, they’re including the doors and trim, which is often a pain to do separately. You could probably find someone cheaper, but that might come with risks. If they’re using quality paint like Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams, it’s likely a solid price. Why not ask about using mildew-resistant paint? That could be worth the extra few bucks.
From my perspective, that seems like a pretty good deal for a professional job, especially in a high-cost area. Remember, painting is a labor-intensive process, especially if they have to tackle mildew and repairs. When I painted my own place, it took much longer than I expected, so they must be pricing in travel time too.
I get that! Just looking at other estimates online made me wonder if this was off. I’ve only painted once or twice myself, so I’m clueless about current labor costs. I guess you all are spot on—it’s just for one room after all.
