Hey everyone! I'm really excited to dive into woodcarving and wanted to get your thoughts on a specific starter set I've found online. Here's the link to it: [starters set](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077NYZBS4/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B077NYZBS4&pd_rd_w=ROyEI&content-id=amzn1.sym.7446a9d1-25fe-4460-b135-a60336bad2c9&pf_rd_p=7446a9d1-25fe-4460-b135-a60336bad2c9&pf_rd_r=21HZVE4DKEBWRS2BY96S&pd_rd_wg=3KokC&pd_rd_r=942446bf-2af1-4481-9e9b-7b1f811cc738&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWw). What do you all think? Is it a good choice for a beginner? Any other tools or sets you'd recommend?

I've got to say, a lot of starter sets are pretty mediocre. They tend to dull quickly, which can be discouraging. It really depends on what you're planning to carve. If you're into carving sculptures or pieces like chess sets, a solid knife can do most of the work. For carving hollows, like spoons, you might want to grab a hook knife. Personally, I use an Opinel No6 and it has served me well. Another good brand to check out is BeaverCraft; they offer decent tools without breaking the bank!
Great advice all around! I’ve got a mix of Deepwoods and Mora knives, and they definitely perform well. I also have an old filleting knife that I picked up cheaply, and believe it or not, it comes in handy sometimes. Just remember, the more you invest in quality tools, the better your experience will be!
For sure! Don’t forget the importance of good sharpening tools as well!
Honestly, I don’t recommend that set. Many knives in that price range come too dull to be effective, which can make woodcarving frustrating! If you’re starting out, consider a Mora 106 or an Opinel with a carbon steel blade - super sharp and they’re not too pricey. Regardless of your choice, just be sure to also have a sharpening system ready; it’s essential!
Totally agree! A sharp knife makes all the difference, especially for beginners.
Yeah, I started with dull tools too, and it just made me want to give up. Definitely invest in a good knife!

True that! Quality tools can really enhance your skills and keep you motivated.
