Is Untreated Spruce Suitable for House Construction?

I'm looking to use some free logs of spruce that I can mill myself for my self-build house. Is it safe to use untreated spruce for framing and other construction purposes? What should I consider before using it, especially regarding drying and potential insect issues?

Yes, untreated wood can be used for framing, but kiln drying it is the industry standard for a good reason. Kiln drying helps eliminate pests that might be hiding in the wood. Just make sure to let it dry properly before using it.

Is there any framing that's actually treated?

I can kiln dry it easily since my dad has a hardwood sawmill. However, I'm wondering if it's okay to leave the spruce outside for a year to season before putting it in the kiln. I'm worried it might rot since it's untreated.

Typically, spruce, pine, and fir are used for framing grade lumber. They can work well for timber framing and exposed structures, but remember, untreated spruce shouldn't be in contact with ground or concrete due to potential rot.

If you keep the spruce away from moisture and ground contact, you should be fine using it for framing.
