Is Upgrading to Ridge Vents Worth the Cost for My Roof?

After a recent hail storm, my roof needs replacing, and my contractor recommended some ventilation upgrades to help manage the summer heat. I've already air sealed my attic and installed R 60 insulation since I live north of Denver, where summer temperatures can hit triple digits and winter can plunge below zero. However, I noticed with my thermal imaging camera that there's still quite a bit of heat at the edges where my walls meet the ceiling. The contractor mentioned that upgrading to ridge vents would be the most beneficial option, while adding deck air vents would be helpful but not essential since I have six soffit vents in total (three on each side of the house) and currently four box vents on the roof for about 800 sqft. The optional upgrades would cost $400 for the ridge vents and another $400 for the deck air vents. I'm wondering if the investment in ridge vents would significantly improve the heat situation during summer (or even winter) compared to my current setup, or if I should hold off and spend the money on other home improvements?

I just did a similar upgrade, swapping a turbine vent for ridge venting and adding more intake vents. The temperature in my attic dropped significantly—from over 20°F above outside air to just 2-3°F above most of the time. If you're replacing your roof, it's a solid investment!

Absolutely, based on my own roof upgrade experience, the ridge vent combined with the soffit vents is the best option for effective attic ventilation. It helps not only in keeping the attic cool but also in reducing moisture buildup. I think it will make a noticeable impact on your heat issues!

Thanks for the input! So you're saying it could really help with the heat? That's good to know!

As heat rises, the soffits pull in the cool air while the ridge vents let the hot air escape. This setup works especially well in warm climates, but I'm not sure how it would specifically perform in Colorado's unique weather!

Smart vent systems, along with a roof-mounted exhaust fan, can be game-changers too! They really help to keep your attic cool on hot days, so if you're considering upgrades, those are worth looking into as well!

Just keep in mind the length of your ridge; it needs to be at the highest part of your roof and can’t mix with other exhaust types. Otherwise, you might not get the ventilation effect you want. But overall, it sounds like a great plan for your climate!

I'd go for it! For $800 while you're already doing the roof work, it's worth it. Just having the ridge vent helps to circulate the air better, but don't expect a massive difference. It's more about keeping things balanced out rather than dramatic changes. Plus, you won't regret having it after the hot months come around!
