Is Using 3/4″ Plywood for Shelves Really Necessary?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to add a pantry in my kitchen and I'm debating between using 1/2" plywood for the box and 3/4" for the shelves. I know 3/4" can handle more weight, but I can't imagine needing it with the light items I'd store—probably no more than 20-30 lbs. Is the 3/4" really the standard, or is it overkill for my needs? Also, I tend to prioritize lighter materials, so I'm curious about your thoughts. Thanks!

You'll want to think about load-bearing capacity. If you’re not building something that needs extreme weight support, like RV cabinets, it’s less about the weight and more about strength. A good approach would be to use 1/2" for shelves and 3/4" for the cabinet structure for extra durability.
