I recently built a router table attached to my tablesaw using a 1/2 inch router that I inherited. I've noticed that a lot of DIYers on YouTube tend to use 1/4 inch routers instead. Am I making a mistake by using the 1/2 inch router? Is this setup potentially dangerous or a bad idea?

I actually prefer using a 1/2 inch router in my table, mainly because they have less deflection during use, which helps reduce kickbacks. I’ve seen a lot of creators on YouTube showcasing smaller 1/4 inch routers—probably because they’re more commonly owned—but I believe a 1/2 inch is a safer choice overall. Check out this slow-mo video showcasing bit deflection—it really emphasizes why bigger isn’t always worse!
Yeah, I watched that video too. It definitely changed my perspective on bit sizes.
I’ve got a 1/2 inch router set up in my table too! I bought mine specifically for the purpose of making dados and heavier cuts. The only time I take it out is when I need to flatten slabs. It works great for me, so I think you’re all set using yours!
I use a 1/2 inch router for most of my work in the table and find it much safer compared to a 1/4 inch router for heavier tasks. I keep a 1/4 inch router handy for light, detailed work like rounding edges. For the heavier cuts, I think you’re good with that setup!

That's so true! I love how a bigger bit can provide more stability.
