Hey everyone! I'm currently restoring a drawknife and I'm getting ready to make a shavehorse to go along with it. However, I've got this nagging fear about using the drawknife. I mean, it looks super sharp and dangerous because you pull it towards yourself! I've heard scary stories about accidents, and I just want to know: is it common for people to get seriously hurt with a drawknife? I tried using my elbows to gauge how far I can pull back, but I'm just a bit worried. Are there any protective measures I can take while using it? I could really use some advice.

I've used a drawknife extensively, and while it looks dangerous, it's pretty manageable. As long as you’re not forcing it and have a solid stance, you're unlikely to hurt yourself—especially with a shavehorse. And I think an apron is a great idea for peace of mind! I haven't heard of anyone getting seriously injured, and I’ve been at this for a while without issues.
For me, the trick is keeping the blade sharp. A dull blade can be riskier than a sharp one because you might end up using too much force. Just practice that smooth pulling motion and watch your grip. If you’re using it correctly, you shouldn’t be able to reach anywhere dangerous with the blade while shaving wood.
That makes sense! I think I'll focus on the technique and keep the blade in good condition. Thanks for the tip!
I've been using a drawknife for years, and honestly, it's pretty safe as long as you have the right technique. You're way more likely to hurt yourself with a chisel! Just make sure the workpiece is well clamped, take light shavings, and avoid severe cuts where the blade might get stuck. If you're deliberate with your motions, there's barely any chance of getting hurt. It's all about control!
I totally get that fear—I felt the same at first. But yeah, if you keep things steady and take your time, you'll be fine. Maybe try using a wooden apron for extra protection? That could help you feel more secure.

That's reassuring! I've been a bit too cautious, but now I feel like I can give it a proper try. Appreciate the advice!
