I'm considering how to add some privacy along my fence line since I can't plant directly there due to my patio and pathways. My neighbors have raised their garden, making it taller than my fence (I know that's not allowed, but it's already done). I'm looking for plants in pots that can reach at least 2 meters tall for some quick coverage. I'm curious if bamboo could work in pots, or would it still spread? Also, given the recent heatwaves, I'm interested in options that can survive without frequent watering.

Ugh, I get it! My neighbors did the same thing. I found that cherry laurels and privet work great in pots for privacy. I’ve also used Jerusalem artichokes during summer—they add some height while being relatively low maintenance.
I’ve had bamboo in pots for years, but I have to say, it doesn't grow as tall or dense as in the ground. Even in large planters, it can be a bit limited. If you're aiming for 3 meters, you might want to consider other options if the bamboo doesn't pan out. Just a little tip!
Privet hedge in pots is a solid choice. If you can snag some privet branches from someone who’s pruning, they’re super easy to grow and budget-friendly! Just keep them well-watered to establish their roots.
Bamboo in pots can definitely work for screening! Just make sure to choose a clumping variety instead of a running one to avoid it spreading. Clumping bamboo is much easier to manage and behaves well in pots. Also, be sure your pots have drainage holes—bamboo doesn’t like sitting in water. You might want to get clumping bamboo online, as local stores often sell the spreading types.
