I've been using a bar soap to wash my hair every day instead of shampoo, and I'm wondering if this is a bad idea. I'm 29, my hair is good, but I've noticed that it looks amazing in the morning and then gets hard to manage after I wash it. I don't blow-dry my hair often and I've got medium thick, oily hair. Should I wash my hair every day? Would just rinsing it with water work, or should I stop washing it altogether?

As a hairstylist, I gotta say bar soap is harsh! It's better to use proper shampoo that's gentle on your scalp. Look for products without sulfates and other harsh chemicals. And yes, consider two shampoos instead of one to get that clean feeling without any residue. Your hair will love you for it!
Do I really need to buy two different shampoos though?
Washing your hair with bar soap daily? Yikes! That will likely lead to difficulties. As your scalp adjusts, you might find you can go longer without washing. Limiting shampoo to once or twice a week, while using a good conditioner daily, is a more sustainable approach. It's all about your hair adjustments!
What if I go two weeks without washing? Is that recommended?
Thanks for the approach! I'll give it a try!
Seriously, using bar soap on your hair isn't great! It's harsh and can leave a residue that makes your hair unmanageable. You should try a sulfate-free shampoo instead—those are much gentler on your scalp and hair. Plus, shampooing and conditioning daily might work if your hair is thinner, but thicker hair usually can go longer between washes. It's all about finding what works best for you!
Any brands you recommend for sulfate-free shampoo?
I've just switched to sulfate-free too, and it's a game changer!
You really shouldn't wash your hair every day! Try shampooing once or twice a week and condition daily. Shampoo is a detergent that cleans better without leaving soap residue, which is likely what makes your hair feel greasy and hard to manage after washing. Everybody's hair is different, so adjust based on your own needs!
So what's the best way to manage greasy hair then?
Totally agree! It depends on your hair type.
Bar soap strips natural oils from your hair, leading to overproduction of oil. This is probably why your hair gets greasy so quickly. Consider using a moisturizing conditioner regularly, and you might notice a difference. It's all about balance; if you're washing daily and getting oily, you may be overwashing!
What about if I feel my hair is starting to smell?
Definitely, a good conditioner can help!

Just switched to shampoo and conditioner, and I already feel a difference!
