Just Moved In and Want to Start a Vegetable Garden – Need Help!

Hey everyone! I just moved into a place that has a raised garden bed and an in-ground garden, and I want to start my own vegetable garden. I'm a total newbie here, so I don't even know where to start researching! I'm thinking of just planting two cucumber plants to get started. I've already tilled the raised bed, and I'll be tilling the in-ground bed soon. My plan is to add fertilizer to both beds and then put the plants in next week. Does that sound right? Also, any easy-to-understand resources for gardening would be awesome because I can be a bit hopeless with plants!

I wouldn't till the existing garden bed any further; you're just bringing up dormant weed seeds. Instead, try adding some compost to the top and go from there! It's a better approach for your plants without disturbing the soil too much.

If you’re in Minnesota, definitely check out your county extension or a nearby university. They usually have great guides tailored to your area, like planting calendars and specific recommendations. Here's an example: extension.umn.edu/how/planting-and-growing-guides. Good luck with your garden!

Focus on what you like to eat! Check local planting times for your area. Swing by your library and grab some books on vegetable gardening; they usually have beginner guides with detailed instructions. Remember, you don’t need to till a bed that’s already established—just amend it with compost and plant away! And if you’re up for it, consider trying tomatoes too; starter plants from the nursery are generally easier than starting from seeds.

Absolutely, tomatoes are a great choice! They tend to thrive and produce well when cared for.
