Lie Nielsen vs. Blue Spruce Honing Guide: Which One Should I Choose?

Has anyone had experience comparing the Lie Nielsen (LN) honing guide to the Blue Spruce? I've heard great things about the LN but there are claims it's not as compatible with tools from other brands. I'm wondering if the Blue Spruce is more versatile instead. Is there anything specific that justifies the higher price of the Blue Spruce? Currently, the only hand tool I own is an LN block plane, so I could easily stay within their product line. For some context, I primarily use power tools but I've recently begun to appreciate hand tools, especially after using the block plane. I know some advocate for freehand sharpening, but I have limited time and prefer to ensure my tools remain sharp without the extra fuss.

I can't speak for the Blue Spruce, but my experience with the LN guide has been fantastic. The quality is unmatched, and every LN iron and chisel fits perfectly. I've also had no issues with my Stanley and even a Veritas plane blade fitting in there. However, switching jaws for different sizes can be a hassle, but it's important to find a method that works for you. Sharpening doesn’t have to be about doing it a certain way; it's about getting your edge ready to work!

The Blue Spruce is designed for 1 1/2” wide blades, which means you're limited if you have any larger bench planes. The LN honing guide doesn’t disappoint, and it has attachments for skews and mortise chisels, making it quite versatile. And remember, there's no right way to sharpen; as long as your blades are sharp and ready, you're doing it right!

I snagged the Lie Nielsen honing guide from a retired woodworker along with all the different jaws for just $50—what a steal! After using it, I’d gladly pay full price. I’ve never tried the Blue Spruce, but I’ve heard most people recommend the LN for its versatility and quality.
