Hey everyone! I just moved into a new rental apartment about a week ago, and I'm noticing a strange lingering smell that seems like paint. I checked with the previous tenants, and they confirmed they used new paint over a month, applying two coats. They said they don't dilute the paint with water, but I'm left wondering if it's really new or possibly old paint. I've been ventilating the apartment by keeping the windows open and using air circulators, plus I've even placed bowls of vinegar around to help absorb the odor. Despite all this, some walls still give off a faint chemical smell that's somewhat reminiscent of paint or maybe even mild mold, but definitely nothing rotten or foul. I have a few questions: 1. Could the smell be due to VOCs from the paint? 2. Does this hint that spoiled paint might have been used, or could it be something else? 3. Is it safe to sleep here with that smell still present? 4. Any tips on getting rid of the smell more effectively? Thanks for your input!

Totally get where you're coming from! Even VOC-free paints can have some lingering odors. It’s been a week, so if it’s still strongly chemical, I’d check for moisture problems that could lead to mold. Just keep ventilating, and you might also try using baking soda or activated charcoal to absorb the smell.
It's pretty common to still catch some paint smells even a week after painting, particularly with water-based or latex paints. VOCs can linger for a bit, but generally, as long as you've aired out the place, it's considered safe. Just keep the air flowing! Don't stress too much about it.
What do you think I'm smelling, then?

I agree, but a week later, I’d expect it to be less noticeable.
