Looking for a Part for My Stanley Router Plane – Any Suggestions?

I'm trying to fix my Stanley 71 router plane and need help finding a specific part. I mainly require a 1/4"-24 threaded rod to secure the wheel and cutter, but I can't seem to locate it online. It feels like such a basic piece, yet the dimensions seem pretty uncommon nowadays. I checked out Lowe's, but they sent me the wrong item and even attempted to charge me for the return. While I've found some options at specialty stores for around $40, I'm reluctant to pay that much for something so simple, especially since I might need to replace other parts after de-rusting. Anyone have ideas or tips on where I can find one? Is there something obvious that I'm overlooking?

1/4-24 is indeed a rare thread type, but it's actually not as hard to work with. You can grab a 1/4-24 die to make your own threaded rod from standard 1/4" rod—it doesn't cost much. Alternatively, consider salvaging from another broken router plane. If you're feeling adventurous, you could even invest in an engine lathe and craft one from scratch, but be warned, that could start a whole new hobby!

It's not too bad with the right tools—definitely look it up online, it’s a neat skill to have!

Haha, if I get into another hobby now, I might just lose it! But seriously, how complicated is making one from a die? Can it be hand-cranked?

You can find threading tools relatively easily, it's a good skill for your restoration projects! Check out the link for special pitch dies; you'll need one for cutting threads. Just a heads-up, you might need to order a little extra to hit the minimum order—always good to stock up on supplies anyway. Plus, don’t forget your threading oil! It really makes the job easier.

You should definitely check out Michael Jenks from the "Just Plane Fun" Facebook group or visit his website. He’s a go-to for folks in the know and might just have the threaded rod you're after. Also, I've heard he has some extras from broken router planes, so it’s worth reaching out!

Hey, just a thought—check Amazon for threaded rod options. They might even have what you need!
