Hey everyone, my mom is going through a tough divorce, and her air conditioning at home isn't working. Unfortunately, my dad isn't releasing any funds to help fix it. With summer in Southern California on the way, I'm worried about her being stuck without AC. The house has crank-open windows that seem tricky for mounting a window AC unit. I've heard about portable ACs, but they usually need some way to vent outside. Does anyone have suggestions for AC options that could work for her situation?

I'd also focus on whatever AC units are already in the family room. Do you have any photos to share? There might be estimates available for the repairs. Some companies will let you pay for the installation over time, which could make it more manageable.
I’d recommend going with a portable air conditioner. You can fully open the awning window and use a piece of PVC board (or wood) cut to fit in the opening. You’d then cut a vent hole for the AC and seal it with removable caulk if it’s just temporary. Just keep in mind that depending on the cost of the unit, you might be looking at around $500 or so. This is a decent solution if you can’t make permanent changes to the house.
If you have the freedom to do so, I'd seriously consider just getting the AC fixed! Some places offer payment plans for repairs which could make it easier. However, if it’s really old and needs replacing, I’d brace for quotes in the $60k range – it’s frustrating, for sure! In some areas like Seattle, it’s hard to find repair companies that won’t push for a full replacement even for minor issues.

Yeah, it can feel like highway robbery! In many places, the cost of living drives up repair prices, and companies seem more eager to sell new systems than fix old ones.
