Hey everyone! I'm in northern Wisconsin and I'm planning to resurface my fireplace while keeping a rustic vibe, especially with my cedar paneling. I have access to Menards and Home Depot, so I'm curious about a couple of things: 1) I want to remove the metal vents and fill in those holes. Any tips on how to do that effectively? I'm looking for suggestions on materials or products. 2) Also, what's the best way to refinish the brick? What type of mortar should I use, and do you have recommendations for tiles or other materials that would suit the aesthetic?

Just a heads up, if your fireplace is still functional, you shouldn't fill in those vents since that can create a fire hazard. Those vents help with airflow, so covering them could cause overheating. Maybe you can find a way to integrate them into your design instead of completely blocking them off?

Thanks for the warning! Just to clarify, the vents are empty and don’t seem to provide much heat. Most fireplaces don’t have them, so I’m not sure why mine does. I'm curious how covering them would pose a risk.
