Hey folks, I'm on the hunt for some reasonably priced 3/4" to 1" thick lumber that's comparable to the cost of standard dimensional lumber like 2x4s or 2x6s. The prices at big box stores are a bit too high for my budget. I have a table saw that I could use to split thicker boards, but it's not perfectly set up, so the cuts tend to wander on longer pieces. Any suggestions on where to find better deals?

You definitely have to be ready to spend a bit for quality wood. Poplar is usually a good option if you're looking for something affordable. Plus, if you can do some of the milling yourself, that's a huge money-saver. Just try to find a reliable hardwood supplier nearby. Also, investing in a band saw can really help you manage your cuts better!
In my area, I’ve found that local hardwood dealers often have domestic hardwoods like ash, red oak, and poplar at prices that can be pretty competitive with pine at big box stores. If you can handle a slight price increase for quality wood, it’s worth checking out a proper dealer instead of the usual big orange store. You might get some really nice material without breaking the bank!
Once you step away from construction lumber, the reality is that wood can be pricey, especially hardwood. It's a good idea to connect with local lumber mills—they often have the best prices. Auctions can also be a goldmine; I got a massive batch of rough cedar for a steal recently. Just keep your eyes peeled for good deals!

Totally agree! I snagged a great deal on cherry wood last year at an auction too—it's a great way to stock up without spending a fortune.
