Looking for Beginner Woodcarving Set Recommendations!

Hey everyone! I'm excited to dive into woodcarving and I'm on the lookout for some advice on beginner tool sets. I came across a beginner's guide that lists a bunch of tools and brands, but I'm wondering if I really need all of those tools to start out. Also, what would be considered a decent 'mid-range' brand that offers a solid set with the essential tools for beginners? Thanks in advance for your help—I'm really looking forward to starting this new hobby!

I recommend the Pfeil Swiss-Made, Brienz Collection. It's a fantastic set to kick things off, and you can grab it for around $150. Definitely worth it for beginners!

Start with a good workbench first, and then slowly build your tool collection as your skills improve. A sturdy place to secure your workpiece is crucial! Plus, one sharp, quality tool is much better than a bunch of mediocre ones.

If you’re unsure about committing to woodcarving, don’t break the bank right away. You can find a good beginner knife for just 15-30 euros. And when it comes to wood, try asking local carpenters for their scraps—most are happy to give them away in exchange for a couple of beers!

Sounds like a solid plan! I’ll definitely check around for some leftover wood.

A Flexcut kit is ideal for starters along with cut-resistant gloves, a strop, and some 1x1 basswood blocks to practice on. It sets you up nicely without overloading you with tools.

It really depends on what kind of woodcarving you’re aiming for. For instance, I mostly do figure carving. I started with a detail knife (Flexcut KN13), a strop, and some safety gear like a thumb guard and carving glove. Trust me, safety is key—those tools are sharp! I had a close call once, but the glove saved me from a nasty cut!
