I'm really tired of overpaying for basic MDF and composite desk tops, which can cost between $200 to $400, and end up bowing under weight. My old desk is a prime example! Recently, I've been exploring the DIY route and found a solid poplar workbench top for about $460, which exceeded my expectations. Now, the challenge is finding a sturdy frame that can support these hefty 1.5" thick tops. I'm at a crossroads: should I continue with my DIY project or just buy a pre-made standing desk that matches everything? I'd love to hear from anyone who's tackled this — did you go with a full desk or DIY? Was it worth it?

I got a base from Amazon and a melamine table top from Facebook Marketplace. Perfect standing desk setup!
I've been looking for a standing desk too, and several friends have recommended the Husky adjustable workbenches. They come with solid 1.2” thick wood tops and are available in different sizes, some with drawers! The only catch is they use a manual crank instead of electric, but honestly, that simplicity has its perks!
I picked one up around Black Friday, and it's been fantastic! Didn't expect everyone to use it as a standing desk, but it’s super sturdy!
You can find many places online that sell standing desk frames. You might want to calculate the weight of your top by using poplar's density—just multiply by volume! Then, add in whatever else you're stacking on top to find the right frame size.
If all you need is a solid frame, you can make one with salvaged lumber and just add some nice skin to it to hide the frame. I could probably put something like that together in a few hours!
I built mine out of ¾" maple plywood for under $100 and it took only about two hours. I reused a cheap sit/stand frame I found on Amazon for around $200.
I went with a Monoprice frame and an IKEA bamboo top. Super satisfied with that setup!
That's the same combo I have, and I love it!
Definitely check out the Husky adjustable workbench with drawers at your local Home Depot. I've had mine for over a year and I absolutely love it!
I actually paired a Husky workbench top with a VIVO electric desk frame. The top was around $100 and the frame about $300.
Buying a strong frame and then getting a butcher block top from Home Depot is a good way to go, too!
You can find standing desks on Amazon for around $100 these days. Just use your own top!
Another option is to check out used office furniture stores for solid frames on a budget! You might get lucky.
I've had my IKEA desk for years; got it ages ago for about $300, and it's been great. You can get the tabletop separately and choose the hydraulic lift. It's like customizing a sit-stand desk!
Building your own top is an awesome learning experience. I learned so much more than expected. If you're looking for a frame, I used the Smartdesk DIY kit; it was adjustable, fit my custom slab perfectly, and has held up under heavy weight beautifully. If you want a full desk, check out their Smartdesk Levitate; it looks great!
I recommend the Flexispot desk; you can select just the frame for around $130. It's a solid choice!
I really like my Secretlab Magnus Pro; it’s excellent quality all around.

I've got three of these in different sizes, and they're built like tanks!
