I'm in the process of scaling up my home solar system and need to figure out a more affordable way to mount new panels on my shed roof. I've been using the standard aluminum extruded mounts, but they tend to get pricey quickly. Has anyone come across a solid, budget-friendly mounting design—perhaps something that could even be 3D printed—that can securely hold a single standard-sized, lightweight panel screwed down to the roof?

Some people have had luck using wood for the rails! You just need clips and some good exterior screws. Although, keep in mind this probably won’t pass any inspections if that’s a concern for you.
Just a heads up, while the weight of the panel might seem like the main concern, you actually need to think more about the wind load. It can be significant! So whatever design you choose, make sure it can handle that.
Honestly, I'm not too worried about that. My shed is in a pretty sheltered spot, and my current setup with a couple of panels propped against the shed has held up just fine, even in storms.
I usually print with ABS, which is pretty durable for outdoor use. But I recommend against trying to 3D print the brackets. They're likely to need some serious reinforcement to last long-term. It's probably better to just buy them pre-made.
Where’s the fun in that? 🙂 But I’m open to suggestions! Last time I used some aluminum mounts, they were decent but also a bit too complex and pricey for my needs, especially since I plan to add more panels.
Have you considered using Unistrut? It might be more cost-effective, and you could have it powder-coated or painted for extra protection.
Inspection isn't a big deal for me since it’s all going on my shed and maybe a ground frame. Wood rails sound like a good option, I'll definitely check out some clips!
