Looking for Coastal Cottage Garden Ideas for My Front Yard

Hey everyone! I'm thinking about revamping my front yard landscaping and would love some tips. I'm in Zone 8, with a front yard that faces slightly east and mostly south, getting full sun until about 3:00-4:00 PM. I'm aiming for a coastal cottage vibe. I adore Camellias, Azaleas, and roses, but I'm unsure what other plants would fit this theme. I also struggle with placement, but I'm eager to learn and get it right! Any suggestions?

I get where you’re coming from! A coastal cottage garden often mixes traditional favorites with some hardy, seaside-friendly plants. Think about adding some ornamental grasses alongside your Camellias and Azaleas to get that coastal look. Sea oats or beach grass could work well too. And don’t forget to consider the height and spacing of your plants—we want a nice layered effect!

Thanks for the tip about the ornamental grasses! I think they'll really help achieve that coastal vibe I’m aiming for. What kind do you think would do best in my area?

To start off, check out the plants listed on the South Coast Botanic Garden's website. They have a great selection and offer seasonal breakdowns which can help you plan for year-round interest. Plus, look into using native plants since they attract local wildlife and adapt well to your climate. It might take some extra effort upfront for research and sourcing, but in the long run, it's definitely worth it!
