Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice on work holding techniques in my cramped garage workspace. I thought I was being clever by using my toolbox as a bench but quickly realized it's not suitable for holding my projects securely. I'm currently struggling with my setup. I've tried using small F-clamps with a piece of 2x10, which is a bit clumsy. When I adjust things, it feels like I'm fighting against gravity, and my clamps often get in the way when I'm trying to cut. I was considering building a Moxon vice, but the one I borrowed was too high for comfort. I would appreciate any suggestions you could share that would work well in my limited space. Thanks!

How small is your garage? I also work in a tight space with my vehicle. If possible, try building a new workbench with dog holes and holdfasts. It can make a world of difference!
I recommend diving into some workholding literature. Many craftsmen have tackled this issue over the years. A great resource is Chris Schwarz's *The Anarchist's Workbench*, which is available as a free PDF. Your workholding needs might vary depending on what you want to do—like resawing or dovetailing. Personally, I've worked with just F-clamps and trigger clamps before I installed a leg vise, and it worked out pretty well!
I hadn’t even thought of a leg vise! I just tried putting one together based on your suggestion, and it works perfectly. Now I just need to make it permanent!
You might want to consider screw clamps that allow you to clamp your piece securely and then attach that clamp to your bench. It can really simplify the setup!
It's a bit cramped, especially with my wife's van taking up space. I do have a bench top with dog holes already, so that's a plus. Planning to add a stop soon!
