Looking for Kitchen Remodel Tips!

Hey everyone! My husband and I just bought a charming 1940's home that needs a total kitchen overhaul. The previous DIY attempts were a bit of a mixed bag, and right now, our kitchen is quite a mess. The fridge and oven are blocking most of the lower cabinets, and the pantry is just an awkwardly deep cupboard. Plus, the support joints in the floor were not done correctly, so we're planning to gut the entire kitchen and fix everything from the ground up. Since this is going to be a long project, we'll be living in the house while we work on it. I could really use your advice on layouts, must-have features, pantry solutions, and tips for surviving without an operational kitchen during the remodel!

When we remodeled our kitchen, we found a pull-out trash and recycling bin to be a game-changer. If you go that route, ask about a metal strip for the top edge to keep it looking nice over time! Also, think about drawers with pegs for your plates and bowls—they're super handy. Don't forget to add plenty of outlets, especially if you're including an island; they're lifesavers during parties! Consider your small appliances too—having designated spots or pull-out drawers can make your life easier. And lighting is key; mix up your task and mood lighting for the best results.

If you need to survive without a kitchen, think about setting up a camping-style kitchen in your living space. We cleared a spot for the fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and an air fryer. You can make it work! Just keep in mind what you’ll need easy access to and try to set everything up in one area.

Check out kitchen efficiency diagrams that were all the rage back in the 50s. They focus on the triangle concept between your sink, stove, and fridge to streamline movement. Also, think about placing the dishwasher close to the sink and keep spices near the stove for quick access. If you're considering stone counters, quartz is better than granite since granite can stain easily. And don’t forget to have a designated spot for those bulky appliances!

When we did our kitchen reno, we mocked up the layout with tape on the floor, which helped us visualize the space and avoid major mistakes like misplacing the dishwasher. It's super helpful to plan carefully! A 3D visual can be invaluable, especially for ensuring things will function well together. If you find someone selling cabinets, they might offer planning help as part of the deal, which is totally worth it!
