Looking for Plans for a Joinery Practice Box

I'm diving into woodworking as a hobby and I've decided to practice various joinery techniques like finger, miter, dowels, and dovetails. I think building a small box would be a fun project where I can use a different joint for each corner to highlight my learning process. Ideally, I'd like to repeat this project a few times to track my progress and end up with a polished version in hardwood. However, I'm struggling with how to design this box. I could use CAD to sketch it out, but I'm not sure how to properly measure join dimensions or which joints to attempt. Are there any ready-made plans available online? Do woodworkers have a specific name for this kind of project? Is this plan viable, or am I setting myself up for failure since it doesn't seem like the most practical way to make a box? I tried to search for "joint sampler box" but ended up with unrelated results, so I'm hoping for some guidance from fellow woodworkers here.

It sounds like you're getting caught up in the CAD side of things. If you're comfortable with CAD, great! But honestly, you can just dive in and start making the box without a model. The order and placement of your joints matter, so just plan that part out. You might learn more building it than planning it forever. I recommend starting simple—maybe a standard square box using just a few joints. Then you can improve on the next one. It's a great way to boost your attention to detail as you figure things out. Just remember, fitting everything together will be a bigger challenge than it looks!

Exactly! Don't overthink it too much. Just gather your materials, and get to work. You'll learn more by doing than worrying about being perfect from the get-go.
