Hey folks,
I've got about 75 meters of land at the back of my paddock that borders another field, and there's a road at the end. I'm anticipating that a house might eventually be built there, so I want to plant some tall trees now for privacy down the line. I'm aiming for trees that can reach around 15-20 meters in height since the road is slightly elevated.
I've thought about Lombardy poplars since they're fast-growing, but my partner is leaning towards evergreens. Any recommendations for quick-growing tall trees that could work well as a screen?

I suggest mixing it up with some European Lime, Hornbeam, Field Maple, or even Sweet Chestnut. Lombardy poplars are pretty quick, but they don't tend to last as long. If you want more evergreen options, Western Cedars or Norway Spruce could be good picks. They grow fairly quickly and provide that year-round hiding spot you're looking for!
Have you thought about Western Hemlock Fir? It can grow about 50cm a year and reach over 20 meters, plus you can shape it into a hedge if needed. Laurels and hybrid larches are also good options—both are quick-growing and can add some variety. For conifers, Norway Spruce is another fast grower you might consider.
You might want to consider a yew hedge! They can grow to about 20 meters and are evergreen, so they'd provide privacy year-round. Personally, I also love deciduous trees for seasonal variety—field maple or hawthorn could be great too since they reach a good height. Just know they’ll lose their leaves in the winter, which isn’t ideal for everyone.
Totally agree, but the lack of leaves in winter can be a downside, right?
Holly could work as well! It's hardy and grows well for privacy.

I wonder if there’s too many deciduous in that mix. I've heard great things about Western Hemlock Fir too—it grows fast and has a really nice smell!
