Hey everyone, I'm in the market for a new wood planer and I've come across some helical-style planers from brands like Fox, Grizzly, Oliver, Vevor, Cutech, and Jet. Since I'm just a hobbyist, I'm hesitant about dropping $1200 on one. What do you think about these brands and their price differences? Are they worth it? Thanks in advance!

Watch out! Some brands say they have helical cutters, but it's really just staggered individual cutters instead of a true spherical head. I've been using a Wahuda model and it’s been solid for me. But I’m personally thinking about upgrading to something bigger with an actual helical head just to get that performance boost.
Honestly, if I could do it again, I'd opt for a used drum sander. Planers can give you snipe and tear out issues, plus the width limits can be a real hassle. Just food for thought!
If you already own a planer, check if there's a helical cutter compatible with it. That way, you won't need to buy a whole new machine. Just a heads up though, standard straight cutters are perfectly fine! The downside is if they chip, you have to replace the entire blade, unlike with helical cutters where you can replace individual blades. It’s something to consider!

That makes sense, but the helical replacement I found was over $500 anyway. Might as well invest in a new planer since mine's pretty old.
