I'm planning a significant remodel of my bathroom, aiming to at least double its size to include a shower since it currently just has a tight space for a toilet. To achieve this, I'll need to remove a closet and a bar area that are located behind the bathroom. We've never taken on a project of this scale before and would love some advice on where to start. Should I be consulting a general contractor or a specialist for this kind of work? Also, I'm curious about the potential costs involved (in US dollars). I'm expecting it to be pretty expensive, but any basic advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

My bathroom was about 5’x8’, and I completely gutted it down to the studs. The cost estimates I got were between $15k and $25k. I did all the work myself and bought everything needed for around $8600. Given that you're making significant changes, including plumbing, you might be looking at around $20k or more, especially if you're in a higher-cost area.
I would recommend designing around your existing toilet instead of moving it if you can. Depending on your location, expect costs to be somewhere between $20k and $40k, especially if you want any fancy features or have concrete involved. Consider adding a seat in the shower, a rain shower head, and a removable spray head for versatility. A heated floor is also a nice touch, along with insulation like rock wool in the floors and interior walls. Cubbies in the shower can add great functionality too.

Thanks for sharing that! I expected it to be pricey, especially since we’re in the DC metro area. Should I definitely reach out to a general contractor then? I don’t think we have the skills or time to handle this ourselves.
