I'm building a special desk for my wife for our anniversary. We're both gamers, and right now she has a tiny desk that barely fits her monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I want to create something nice for her, and she really likes my design ideas. To make it even more special, I'd love to engrave a symbol representing the class she plays in her favorite game. However, I've never done any engraving before, so I could use some help. I know there are engraving tools available at hardware stores, but I'd rather not spend a lot on a tool I might only use for this one project. Is there a way to do an engraving with common tools? Or do you think I should just invest in a proper tool? If there are cheaper but good options out there, I'd like to know about those too. My plan is to fill the engraving with epoxy afterward, but I'm open to any other creative ideas for adding a personal touch. Thanks!

You could always go the traditional route and use a chisel, knife, and some sandpaper. It will definitely require more artistry and patience, but it can be done! Just remember that it will take longer, but the personal touch might be worth it!
If you're looking to create an engraving, I've had success using a router or a Dremel, especially if your design isn't too big. It allows for nice details, and then you can fill it with epoxy for a cool effect! Just make sure to practice a bit first if you're not experienced with those tools.
