I've got a popcorn ceiling in my house, and I'm thinking about removing it to make my home more appealing before I sell. I aim to tackle it one room at a time, but I'm torn between using a power tool and the traditional spray and scrape method. Has anyone had experience with a popcorn ceiling removal power tool? If so, do you recommend it, or is the spray and scrape method better? Any tips for using these tools effectively would be greatly appreciated!

I totally understand where you're coming from! I just finished removing popcorn ceilings in my house, and while it was a ton of work that took a toll on my shoulder, I’m really glad I did it. I found that the value increase wasn’t huge, but it definitely modernized my place. I tried both the spray and scrape and a power tool method. The power tool didn’t work as well as I hoped, so I went back to manually scraping. My advice: try spraying first with a pump sprayer; if that doesn’t work well, consider dry scraping before bringing out power tools. Oh, and definitely test for asbestos first and expect to skim coat afterward!
Take your time with it! I actually found it therapeutic to work slowly and consistently. It wasn’t stressful for me. Just a heads up, if your house is from before 1980, definitely check for asbestos. Always better to be safe!
I managed to do it without causing too much strain on my shoulders. I’d say pace yourself and take breaks. Also, a good ladder can save you some reaching and straining. Just remember, it’s a big job, so give yourself plenty of time!

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve got a painted ceiling with high-gloss paint, and I’m worried about how that’ll affect the process. Sounds like I need to do some research on techniques for different ceiling types. Honestly, it sounds like it could be a bit of a trial and error process, and I should keep power tools as a last resort, right?
