Hi everyone! I'm a beginner from Argentina exploring the world of wood carving and whittling. I've been trying to find a good carving knife, like the Morakniv 106 or Flexcut, but I'm having trouble sourcing them here. I heard about the Bahco 2444 and 2449, but I've been told those are more for fishing than for carving. Can anyone suggest a suitable knife or share some advice to help me get started in this craft? Thanks a lot!

The Bahco knives are indeed a bit bulky for wood carving. I’m not sure if there are dedicated knife makers for wood carving in South America, but you could check with local artisans or even hit up Instagram accounts like @demadera.argentina for options. If those aren’t suitable, maybe consider an Opinel or a Swiss Army knife. They're often available and can be modified for whittling pretty easily—just check out some YouTube videos for tips on how to mod them!
Hey Saik_98! Just to clarify, are you struggling to find these knives in local stores, or is it also about getting them shipped to Argentina? I managed to get a set of Flexcut knives delivered from eBay to Brazil, but you're right, local options can be pretty sparse. Wood carving is such a relaxing hobby and a great break from screens!
Honestly, I started my wood carving journey using just a simple Cub Scout jackknife! All you need is a sharp edge to start making some chips. As you get along, you can always invest in more specialized tools later!
Totally get what you mean, it's frustrating when the best tools aren't available! But those modifications can really make a difference. Just ensure the knife you choose has a blade length of around 3-4 cm.
