Looking to Grow Strawberry Seeds in Memory of My Sister

Hi everyone, I recently lost my sister, and it hit me hard. I always used to buy her strawberries, and now that I have my last pack, I can't bear to just let them go to waste. I know that seeds from store-bought strawberries can have unpredictable germination rates and might not even produce fruit, but I want to give it a shot anyway. The thought of them going moldy is upsetting for me, so I was thinking of drying them out instead of tossing them. I've heard that removing the seeds from the fruit directly might be more effective, and I'm considering trying to germinate them on a paper towel in the fridge. On top of that, she left behind a single snapdragon in the backyard, which is surprisingly still alive! I know that snapdragons are usually annuals or short perennials, so if anyone has any tips on keeping it thriving or harvesting seeds, I'd really appreciate it. This might sound like an odd way to process my grief, but I'm eager for any advice you can share.

Sending love your way! I think planting seeds is a wonderful way to cope with grief. Aside from drying, you could also try germinating some fresh seeds to see if they take. There’s no wrong way to grieve, and whatever feels right for you is perfect.

I'm really sorry to hear about your sister. It's clear how much you loved her, and trying to grow her favorite strawberries sounds like a beautiful way to honor her memory. If you're looking into germinating strawberry seeds, removing them individually might give you a better chance compared to keeping them in the fruit. Some people have success with the fridge method, but it could be worth trying a few different ways to see what works best for you!

So sorry for your loss! It's great that you're looking to grow something in her memory. To successfully harvest snapdragon seeds, wait until the flower dries up and the seed pods are ready, which usually happens in the fall. You can put a mesh bag around the pods to catch the seeds when they dry completely. Take care and happy planting!
