Hey everyone! I'm really eager to dive into woodworking, especially wanting to create some boxes and maybe try my hand at a bit of carving. My stepdad has a fully equipped workshop, but I can't rely on him for access, which makes it tricky for me to get started. I'm thinking about crafting a box with hidden compartments entirely by hand. I've searched online for techniques and guidelines for hand tools, but I'm not finding much. Am I aiming too high here? Is it possible to make this type of box without power tools? Sorry if this question seems naïve, but I'd really appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks!

Starting with whittling at home is a great idea! If your stepdad has access to a bandsaw or a jigsaw, you can make a box with up to 1.5 inches in height. Check out the technique called 'bandsaw box'—essentially, you cut the back off the box, set it aside, cut out a center piece, and then glue everything back together. The piece you cut out can even serve as a drawer for your box! If you want to stick to hand tools, a coping saw works too, just make sure you have a sturdy table to clamp it to.
I’m not sure what knives or chisels to get either. I’ve seen a few tutorials but sharpening those tools seems daunting. I tend to overthink things and get worried about messing them up, haha. Would a portaband work if I use it in my stepdad's shop?
