LVP vs Engineered Hardwood: Which is Safer for Kids?

I'm trying to decide between luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and engineered hardwood for our home. With a baby on the way, I'm really concerned about the health impacts, particularly around toxic materials. I've heard that while there are VOC-free LVP options, they might not be truly free, just lower in harmful chemicals. Plus, I've read that sometimes they just replace those chemicals with different synthetic ones that are also bad but not as well-known. On top of that, engineered hardwood uses glue and finishes that could also be concerning. Solid hardwood is out of my budget, so I'm looking for some advice on this. Any insights would really help!

I’ve got LVP all over my main floor, and I monitor VOC levels regularly. They usually show pretty low readings, which gives me some peace of mind. Just make sure to ventilate well after installation and it should help minimize those initial off-gassing effects.

What VOC monitor do you recommend?

When it comes to LVP and engineered hardwood, the VOC levels can vary a lot based on the manufacturer. Even carpets and solid hardwood have their own VOC concerns! It might be best to compare specific products and check their Safety Data Sheets for more info. Just remember, the worst off-gassing usually happens early on, so good ventilation can really help reduce exposure after you install it.

Yeah, I figured it would be complex. How do these materials compare in terms of non-volatile compounds, like those that can leach or flake off into food?
