M12 Stubby: Should I Get a 3/8 or 1/2 Inch Anvil?

I've come across tons of threads discussing which anvil size to go for with the M12 Stubby. I'm torn between getting it in 3/8 or 1/2 inch. I currently own an M18 Mid Torque with a 1/2 inch anvil and matching impact sockets. The 3/8 option could allow me to use smaller sockets, but then again, with the 1/2 option, I wouldn't need to buy any new sockets. How crucial is it to have a 3/8 inch impact in situations where the 1/2 inch isn't an option? I'm excluding engine bays since I'm not at that level yet with engine or transmission work.

I say go for the 3/8 and grab an adapter to use your 1/2 inch sockets when needed. That’s what I did, and it worked like a charm! Just recently, I used it for some control arm work and blasted out a stubborn 24mm bolt without a hitch by using my 1/2 socket with the adapter.

Exactly! That's my plan too. If my 3/8 stubby can't handle the job, I’ll just invest in a high torque 1/2" later.

If size is a concern, check out the new subcompact models. They’re smaller than the stubby and come in 1/4 or 3/8 sizes. For the absolute smallest setup, consider getting a 1/4 inch subcompact and matching sockets, especially if you’re mostly working with smaller fasteners.

I'm all in for the 3/8 Subcompact as soon as I find it at Home Depot! For my 1/4 inch needs, I use the Subcompact impact driver with an adapter. It works great for tightening and loosening smaller fasteners.

If you're doing close quarter work, I'd totally recommend the 3/8 inch. It’s surprisingly got more torque for those tighter spots! Plus, it really shines when reaching for those obscured bolts.
